Rare Disease Day

Rare Disease Day raises awareness for diseases like Epidermolysis Bullosa, the disorder I have worked with for the last seven years as the Nurse Educator of debra.

From the Rare Disease Day website:

"Rare Disease Day is an annual, awareness-raising event co-ordinated by EURORDIS at the international level and by National Alliances and Patient Organisations at the national level.

The main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives.

The campaign targets primarily the general public but it is also designed for patients and patient representatives, as well as politicians, public authorities, policy-makers, industry representatives, researchers, health professionals and anyone who has a genuine interest in rare diseases.

Since Rare Disease Day was first launched by EURORDIS and its Council of National Alliances in 2008, more than 1000 events have taken place throughout the world reaching hundreds of thousands of people and resulting in a great deal of media coverage.

The political momentum resulting from the Day has also served for advocacy purposes. It has notably contributed to the advancement of national plans and policies for rare diseases in a number of countries.

Even though the campaign started as a European event, it has progressively become a world event, with over 70 countries participating in 2013. We hope many more will join in 2014. Our objective is for the WHO to recognise the last day of February as the official Rare Disease Day and to raise increasing awareness for Rare Diseases worldwide."

Epidermolysis Bullosa is a rare genetic disorder that affects the proteins that enforce the structural integrity of the skin. Those that have EB face challenges every day. One is a lack of understanding in both the general population and the medical community. Pain and itch can be unbearable. And it can be lonely to grow up with an illness everyone can see that few people have ever heard of.

The strength of the members of the EB community often leaves me in awe. I am grateful to be among them.

Daytona 500 2014: A running commentary

In a Pre-race interview, Mike Waltrip asked Carl Edwards: “How about a back flip at the end of the 500?”

“Not like Clint did- I want to wait till after the race,” was Carl’s snappy reply. I like that boy!

The “Dale call” commercial is pretty funny.

So the first car out of the 500 and now ranked in last place is Martin Truex- his engine gave way and they are done.

"Looks like something knocked the oil pump belt off. You have about 2 seconds to shut if off before it blows" is what Truex reported when interviewed.

Then the rain, lightening and tornado warnings came to Daytona and the red flag came out… on lap 38. So racing will need to resume since we are well shy of halfway.

As it stood, our top ten were: Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne, Denny Hamlin, Brian Vickers, Paul Menard, Brad Keselowski, Jeff Gordon, Joey Logano, Austin Dillon, and Kurt Busch…

Alex Bowman at 16th

Cole Whitt at 18th

Tony at 32nd

Jimmie at 38th

Red Flag appears to be a long one… time to do some laundry…

DelayDelayDelay…

So now, at 6:20pm, it is dark in Daytona, the AirTitans are working… but it is still pretty wet…

To be continued...

It was 6 hours and 22 minutes of rain delay all totaled.

At 8pm, the broadcast resumed…

Lap 46 saw the green flag drop...

And on pit lane:

Kasey Kahne spun on a wet patch leaving pit road

Kyle Busch and Aric Almirola took stuff with them leaving the pits and were penalized

At 9:34, we hit the halfway mark, so now, even if the rains come, this race is in the books…

Happiness is… Cole Whitt in 7th place on lap 108.

Not so happy- Kasey speeding up on his way into pit road to avoid being wrecked by a slidding car, only to be required to do a pass-through for speeding on pit road…

Clint Bowyer pulled into pit lane with a blown engine- Asked about it his response was, "Everyone is out there having fun and we broke our toy."

Tony Stewart is also done- a fuel pressure issue.

The first "Big One" of course happened when Fox was on a commercial break:  Harvick came up  into Brian Scott and started it. Aric Almirola, Danica, Michael Waltrip, Austin Dilllon, Justin Allgaier, David Gilliland, Paul Menard...

It is after 10pm, we have 45 to go and weather is coming...
By the way, FOX- I hate that you are not doing a driver place scroll- this 9 place roll thing is awful- rethink it!

38 laps to go and the second “Big One” had Dillon into Kyle Larson and the wreck collected Ambrose, Kahne, Casey Mears, Bobby Labonte, Michael Annett and Brian Vickers.
We are under caution and our top five are Dale, Biffle, Edwards, Jimmie and Matt Kenseth... 33 to go and the green flag waves- 82 miles to go...

Trevor Bayne in 16th went into the wall after getting loose and we are under caution with 16 to go- works well for those short on fuel.
88-48 are 1 and 2 for the restart with 13 to go...
Kurt Busch spun out but did so without pulling a caution...
But six to go wrecks Terry Labonte, Ryan Newman, Austin Dillon and several of our rookies... And now fuel is going to be an issue...
88-2 are 1 and 2 with 3 laps to go...
Go Dale on to victory! With cars spinning behind him!  10 years after his first win here.
Junior Nation celebrates! We know our first Chase racer for 2014!

Wreckers or Checkers.

Matt Kenseth led the 1st Budweiser Duel and won it without a caution, and the real excitement was Cole Whitt getting in after repairing his damaged car after the big wreck in practice. And Alex Bowman speaking on camera seemed to still be in shock after racing his way in...

Then came the second duel and for 59 laps- nothing but good clean racing.

Then Jimmie (what a week he is having, and not in a good way...) ran out of gas between the 3rd and 4th turns, Jamie McMurray didn't see him wave- understandable at 190+ miles an hour, and they crashed in the wall, crossed over the field and "The Big One" was everywhere...

Clint Boywer did a clean 360 degree barrel roll and landed on 4 wheels and drove to his pit stop. But really, do we expect anything less from the guy who finished the Daytona 500 in 2007 upside down and on fire?

Casey Mears- also out of gas- was saved by the caution- without it, there would be no Daytona 500 2014 for him.

The Labontes also benefitted, which helped David Regan make the field, since a past champion didn't need the spot.

Poor Martin Truex, on the other hand, goes from having a really fast car in the front row to having a back-up car in the back of the field... Still better than his brother, who didn't make the field this year. And Truex was a class act- talking about it not really mattering where you start the 500... I think I will be rooting for him this season.

Almost forgot- Denny Hamlin won the race- I couldn't be happier after him being so badly hurt last year.

Jimmie apologized for the melee and thankfully nobody was hurt...

Daytona is only 3 days away...

Daytona Duels

Speed Week 101

So the Daytona 500 qualifying set-up is unique in NASCAR. The first session is run to set the pole and second place starter- the front line, but if you are not one of the top two, the duels set where you start for the NASCAR superbowl...

And they made this so complicated... I am sure I missed some "raining on a Tuesday" weird rule, but more or less the duels set the field as follows:

Each of the duels is a 150-mile race and  both are held today.

We already know Austin Dillon is the pole sitter, and that Martin Truex will sit in the 2nd spot in the first row. We also know Tony Stewart and Danica Patrick will be in the back of the pack because of blown engine replacements made earlier this week.

More than that, we don't yet know- the rest of the starting grid will be sorted out by the finishing order of the two duels. The entire field will take part in one of the two races, even Dillon and Truex which is weird because they already have starting positions...

The first duel includes the drivers who qualified in the odd positions starting with Dillon. The top 15 in the race will set the order of the inside lane will start during the Daytona 500, as they don't change an engine. The second duel includes the drivers who qualified in the even positions starting with Truex and the top 15 will set the order of the outside starting lane.

When the duels have set the top 32 starters, the four fastest cars not in the top 32 and the six teams with the highest number of teams points in 2013 not already in the 500 are added to finish out the the starting grid for Sunday's big day.

Here's hoping Jimmie has a good day- a repeat of last year, for example...

Drivers, start your engines!

How You Learn to Live Alone- Nashville

First you fall, then you fly
And you believe that you belong up in the sky
Flap your arms as you run
Every revolution brings you closer to the sun
You fall asleep in motion in uncharted hemispheres
And you wake up with the stars falling down around your ears
And when they hit the ground they're nothing but stone

And that's how you learn to live alone
And that's how you learn to live alone

Bit by bit you slip away
You lose yourself in pieces in the things that you don't say
You're not here but you're still there
The sun goes up, the sun goes down
But you're not sure you care
You live inside the thoughts till you don't recognize the trail
People send you pictures and you can't believe it's you
It's been years since your house has felt like home

It don't feel right but it's not wrong
It's just hard to start again this far along
And brick by brick the letting go as you walk away
From everything you know
You release resistance and you lean into the wind
Till  the roof begins to crumble and the rain comes pouring in
And you sit there in the rubble
Until the rubble feels like home

And that's how you learn to be alone...

I Hope You Find It- Cher

"I Hope You Find It"

These clouds aren't going nowhere, darling

Rain keeps coming down

I just thought I'd try to call you

For you got too far outta town

And I hope that you get this message that I'm leaving for you

'Cause I'd hate that you left without hearing the words that I needed you to

And I hope you find it

What you're looking for

I hope it's everything you dreamed your life could be

And so much more

And I hope you're happy, wherever you are

I wanted you to know that

And nothing's gonna change that

I hope you find it

Am I supposed to hang around and wait forever?

Last words that I said

But that was nothing but a broken heart talking, darling

You know it wasn't what I meant

Call me up, let me know that you got this message that I'm leaving for you

'Cause I'd hate that you left without hearing the words that I needed you to

And I hope you find it

What you're looking for

I hope it's everything you dreamed your life could be

And so much more

And I hope you're happy, wherever you are

I wanted you to know that

And nothing's gonna change that

I hope you find it

Whatever it is out there that you were missing here

Well, I hope you find it

What you're looking for

I hope it's everything you dreamed your life could be

And so much more

And I hope you're happy wherever you are

I wanted you to know that

And nothing's gonna change that

I hope you find it

I hope you find it

Oh, oh

Speed Week

Speed Week and the return of NASCAR- I have to say, so far, that it has been pretty exciting.

The Sprint Unlimited  was a field of 18 cars untill Terry Labonte parked after a lap. The last lap of the first segement saw my JJ, old 6-pack himself, out of it after getting the air taken off the back end of his car- Harvick didn't touch him, but he skidded into the infield wall just the same, ending his night.

The "Big One" collected half the field when Matt Kenseth didn't see Joey Logano and slid into him, instead of in front of him. After that it was the wreckers for Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Ricky Stenhouse, and ironically, Danica Patrick, who was originally okay and stopped but then struck by boyfriend Stenhouse, who couldn't see and couldn't stop.

Then the pace car caught fire... seriously? How does that happen?

After a bump from Marcus Ambrose, Dale Earnhart wrecked out as well... bumping on a caution lap? Seriously not Ambrose's fault...

At the end, only 8 cars survived and included several that had been involved in the crashes. And in a race where only winning matters,  Denny Hamlin was the winner- awesome for a guy wrecked out and seriously injured last summer. He was followed to the line by Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch...

Hamlin's comment as he crossed the finish line: "Any questions?" spoke volumes- clearly Homestead was not a fluke- he is back in the mix of contenders for sure.

Valentine's Day

Sometimes Facebook makes me laugh out loud. So in light of the "holiday", I thought I would share a few of my favorites...

And for the poet:

For the cynic:

This speaks for itself...

I hope you all have a good laugh!

Confirmation Day

God School is how we refer to CCD in my house, because CCD disappeared and was replaced by PREP (still not sure what it stands for) since Liz made her confirmation in 7th Grade, back in 2006.

So John has attended since 1st Grade and recieved First Penance and First Communion in 2nd Grade, and this year is his final childhood sacrament tonight.

John has not been a big fan of God School- extra work, extra school... I get it, but you gotta do what you gotta do, and forming the basis of your moral self is more important than he understands right at this moment. He will thank me later... I hope.

I let him pick his outfit for the big day-

He has a black suit, black shirt and silver tie (His sister was with him when he bought the tie) and for his birthday, he got a black fedora- I had to add a ribbon to cover where we removed a patch.

He looks like a little mobster...

Then, to his horror, I made him get his hair cut. Cue dramatic music- he says it is the WORST HAIRCUT EVER!. And he had his formal picture done- so it is captured forever!

I am hoping the pictures don't show his pants were not yet hemmed....

Lyle and John at Practice- 2-5-14
Mean Mommy award to me...

At least his hat covers it, so except for when he is in church, he will be able to cover up... and his hair will grow back soon enough.

He got shoes and in one of the funnier moments of the run up to this evening, I made him take them off in the car when we got home from the practice last week and walk in his socks through the snow so he didn't get salt stains on the new shoes...

Mean Mommy, second award in the same day!

I brought the very well iron pants to my aunt to be hemmed, and the laugh of the day yesterday was her walking in to drop them off only to find a grown man sleeping in John's bed- she raced out completely flustered- it took a while for her to realize it was John's dad, George, who had arrived here yesterday.

Really?

So I am hoping tonight goes well- Confirmation followed by a trip to Applebee's to celebrate.

So proud...

"Gotta Be Somebody" Nickelback

Three years on...

"Gotta Be Somebody"

This time, I wonder what it feels like

To find the one in this life, the one we all dream of

But dreams just aren't enough

So I'll be waiting for the real thing, I'll know it by the feeling

The moment when we're meeting, will play out like a scene

Straight off the silver screen

So I'll be holding my breath, right up 'til the end

Until that moment when, I find the one that I'll spend forever with

Cause nobody wants to be the last one there

Cause everyone wants to feel like someone cares

Someone to love with my life in their hands

There's gotta be somebody for me like that

Cause nobody wants to do it on their own

And everyone wants to know they're not alone

There's somebody else that feels the same somewhere

There's gotta be somebody for me out there

Tonight, out on the street, out in the moonlight

And dammit this feels too right, it's just like déja vu

Me standing here with you

So I'll be holding my breath, could this be the end?

Is it that moment when, I find the one that I'll spend forever with

Cause nobody wants to be the last one there

Cause everyone wants to feel like someone cares

Someone to love with my life in their hands

There's gotta be somebody for me like that

Cause nobody wants to do it on their own

And everyone wants to know they're not alone

There's somebody else that feels the same somewhere

There's gotta be somebody for me out there

You can't give up, (when you're looking for) a diamond in the rough (cause you never know)

When it shows up, (make sure you're holding on)

Cause it could be the one, the one you're waiting on

Cause nobody wants to be the last one there

And everyone wants to feel like someone cares

Someone to love with my life in their hands

There's gotta be somebody for me, oh

Nobody wants to go it on their own

And everyone wants to know they're not alone

There's somebody else that feels the same somewhere

There's gotta be somebody for me out there

Nobody wants to be the last one there

Cause everyone wants to feel like someone cares

There's somebody else that feels the same somewhere

There's gotta be somebody for me out there
