TV 2013-2014

Okay, now that the season is over for my main TV shows, and before we start up on the Summer Run series, I would like to reflect on some of what I liked/loved/will miss…

First the ones that will not be back:

The Carrie Diaries, one of my guilty pleasures, will be missed but ended in a good place. I thought it was a cute show and yet I can see where it would be hard to get it much closer to SATC without issues arising.

Necessary Roughness: Sad, so sad- no more TK, no knowing if Nico and Dr. Santino make it as a couple after jetting off in his private plane... Nico has a private plane?!?! And I was always rooting for Matt to return... Bah humbug!

Intelligence: I really enjoyed this and I hate that it is gone already. And not just because Josh Holloway in Prime Time is a gift from the TV gods. I really enjoyed it and wish it was coming back.

Hostages- yes, I watched it till the bitter end. Not the worst thing I have ever watched, but one season was enough.

Friends With Better Lives: It is a cute concept and amusing and the cast is fun, but it's not nearly as sharp as Modern Family and the Big Bang.

And now for the shows I will be waiting for...

Scandal- The finale... it was like a season in an hour... an episode on speed... well we know Harrison is dying since Columbus Short is not returning... And that Cyrus would let a church full of people die just to get rid of Sally, that Liv's dad was perfectly fine having his minion kill the President's son (HOLY HEAVENS) and that he is pure evil...  And Fitz now knows his old man was not any better- as he now knows Mellie suffered at his hands... And we of Team Jake get to believe, at least for a little while, there is a happily ever after with them flying off into the wild blue yonder... Before he goes- Jake sends David all the documents who could ever want about Liv's evil dad and his evil deeds... So he is still wearing a white hat, even after killing James... But I hate that the season was so short. And I hate that we don't know when it is coming back...

Nashville… Oh Nashville you break my heart… I was so Team Deacon. And then he kissed a newly engaged Rayna… yucky. And poor Will and his horrified wife- wait till they find out they were lied to regarding no cameras in the bedroom for their reality show when the episode of his “I’m gay” confession airs, wrong on so many levels… And Avery, oh Avery… please forgive her, Juliette is so sorry she slept with that beast of a creep Jeff Fordham ~ isn’t not having amnesia enough punishment? And thank the lucky stars we were renewed for another season- though I have NO IDEA how I am supposed to wait all summer and early fall….

Chicago Fire is KILLING ME! Mayday, Mayday, Mayday… Seriously, I do not even want to know who is already signed to do next season and who isn’t because I don’t want to know someone is dead/not… except I really want to know… Darn it! Oh, and Mouch and the Sergeant- too cute. I hope he isn’t dead.  Shay dying would get rid of Devon, who so needs to go…  And one of the Dawson/Casey pair being badly hurt seems likely… Is it September yet?

Grey’s Anatomy saying goodbye to Christina was like the Grey’s of old… Burke... so knew he was married... I like that Christina helped Alex have another option than the boring private practice thing. And it was nice she referenced George... but in doing so, it was odd not to mention Izzy...  I like that “Shepardess” is staying, and don’t care if McDreamy stays or goes…  And getting rid of two annoying interns and bringing in a daughter Richard never knew he had… interesting…  Clearly she is why Ellis left Seattle for Boston. Weird we never found out what happened to the missing kid…

DWTS: The Final Four, Amy, Candice, James and Meryl made a good mix (I would have subbed Wini Cooper for DJ but whatever...)  and the one night a week format makes me happy, which made the split finale a big old pain! And then they eliminated James- Peta looked so sad. Can I say Mark with his shoulder injury powering through while winching in pain... The show must go on... and then Amy on the rope... Seriously Len, it was amazing how do you give them a 9... So on night Two of the season finale (two hours that really could have been done in an hour- I DVRed and watched something else for the first hour and watched the rest with enough prerecorded so I could skip a load of junk they padded the episode with) had 24 hour change-up dances and all three couples did well, though I thought Meryl lost her place there for a minute... Then the decision...  First Candice was announced as the Third place contestant and then after the dramatic stall... they announced Meryl and Maks as the winners and EVERYONE went wild. Maks FINALLY won! That is not to say Amy winning would have been a bad thing- either way it went I was happy- but Maks winning was wonderful.

Mad Men  and this BS split season- which, I hate to break it to you, is actually two really short separate seasons, may have jumped the shark. Between the loping off of a male nipple- poor Ginsburg- and the least attractive ménage à trois in TV history, seriously, not sure what their point is… Harry Crane a partner- I just want to vomit...  But I loved when Don danced with Peggy to My Way by old Blue Eyes. Another tender moment was  the Burger Chef meal with Don, Peggy and Peter- They are the kids Don can be proud of. And then the attempted coup- followed by Burt Cooper dying... and Cutler's cold-blooded assessment that they boost Don from the agency at the same time as Burt gets his send-off chills Roger... Him calling Don to let him know about Burt and Don's tender response... And Don building up Peggy to get the Burger Chef business was wonderful... Her presentation was great! Just like Don taught her ... Roger setting everything up with McCann showed fighting spirit and his loyalty to Don... But I have now idea what to make of Burt's ghost singing and dancing to "The Best Things in Life are Free"...

Bones:  Someone high up in the FBI is rotten to the core and has Booth and Brennen both in cuffs after an amazing action packed season finale (My vote for the bad guy is the Deputy Director, by the way). I figure with Hodgins, Angela, Cam Caroline and Sweets working through all the material they have collected on the bad guy (with all the interns helping out), they will figure it all out and get the bad guy locked up before the end of the season opener. But Booth going back to the FBI??? I will have to think about that.

The Blacklist: Best new show this year... It will be interesting to see how they restructure the task force with Meera dead and Director Cooper hanging by a thread. I don't think Tom is dead, by the way- the body was gone when reinforcements arrived... No body, not dead... I think Red sent the cleaner lady to save Tom and find out what he knows.  I also think... Red was friends with the dissident who married Berlin's daughter (the girl who's photo he stole from the photo album of Stewmaker ) and Lizzy is their child. The Stewmaker killed her mother because Red and the dissident both loved her. Because he loved her mother, Red rescued Lizzy from the house fire that he believes killed her father, he hid Lizzy with Sam. (JoJo Marshall asked: Is the dissident now actually the powerful Russian who chartered the plane to bring Berlin to justice??? Now that could be fun!) So two bad guys next season... though Ressler, Keen and Aram are the only healthy team members left to chase the bad guys with Red's help.

NCIS- Honoring Ralph Waite after his death with the cast mourning the death of his character, Jackson Gibbs was wonderful. And tying in Alejandro Rivera, who's father Gibbs killed, was just good story telling. Loved it. I am still not sure about NCIS New Orleans...but am willing to give it a try.

Chicago PD: Antonio shot... seriously?!? I was with Voight about Pulpo- The Chicago necklace suited him after killing three cops and shooting Antonio. I am a little disturbed that Jin is the rat and it makes me sick to my stomach that Sumner was with Stillwell~ makes me feel icky. Lindsey and Charley and his ex and son... another icky vibe from the get-go. Charley has a past crime on the girls and wants Lindsey to help him blow through a jewelry exchange... Instead, Voight has her back and makes it right. He also has a chat with Jin... who sends his dad out of Chicago ASAP and saves all his computer stuff on a flashdrive for ??? we don't know... Antonio's wife leaving was wrong... But Jin dead... That I did not see coming...

NCIS: LA- In the season where G is dating... Yes, you read that right, he is being a normal person and dating... And Deeks/Kensi crossing that line... And then the finale... Hetty to Washington after giving Nell the "What to do if you don't hear from me" was bad, Sam and G on a sub rigged like a bomb was worse... And now I have to wait all summer? That is just not right....

Modern Family: Wildfires at the wedding venue could not have been funnier. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Nathan Lane as Pepper. He is just always the right amount of over the top. The fire, childbirth, and multiple changes of venue are the chaos before the perfect wedding- at Jay's club on the ocean, preformed by Phil in a tender way, and followed by a wonderful loving speech by Clair... Just perfect!

The Big Bang Theory: Sheldon takes to the rails because he cannot change his area of study and cannot cope with a married Leonard living with Penny instead of him. Raj goes all the way with his articulate funny normal girlfriend and the comic book store burning down leave Howard and Bernadette with full- time help in the form of a completely upbeat Stuart Bloom who gets along famously with Howard's bedridden mom. Now that is a couple nobody saw coming.

Criminal Minds: Matt Cruz as the new leader and an old associate of JJ's played out well at the start of the season (So glad he wasn't a bad guy) Morgan is dating seriously (and hearts break all over the Criminal Minds universe).  Blake is the latest team member to give up on the BAU, not willing to sacrifice her life and marriage for the job. Her son's death at age 9 is on her mind throughout the final episode and she leaves her credentials with Reid, her choice made. Like Gideon, Elle and Prentiss (in some ways), her time with the BAU has changed her. I am curious to see who replaces her.

Elementary: Okay, the way I look at it, they had a four part season finale and I really enjoyed it. Sherlock Holmes in all it's forms and fashions- I am always going to be watching.

CSI: So I am the first to admit- I save up CSI for when I have watched everything else. So I have six episodes to see before my summer shows start in a couple of weeks. I can hardly wait....

Chasing #SE7EN starts at Charlotte

Jimmie Johnson is chasing history- one championship away from tying Earnhardt and Petty. The longest race at the end of the 10 days of Thunder... started with Jimmie on the pole.

JJ has labeled this attempt for a Sprint Cup Championship #SE7EN in honor of Joseph Riddick (Ricky)  Hendrick IV, who was killed along with nine others when the Hendrick Motorsports Beech 200 crashed as a result of pilot error in poor weather outside of Martinsville on October 24th, 2004.

JJ said this was how Ricky always wrote seven...

A lovely tribute...

Today, after Jimmie's win, he is one step closer to #SE7EN, as he is now a chase driver in 2014. Let the celebration begin!

Special mention to Kurt Busch trying the double- finishing 6th in Indy and starting the 600- sad he blew the engine..

Pope Francis in the Holy Land

Pope Francis is going to visit with representatives of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths over the next three days as he visits the Holy Land. Jordan and Israel, the cities of Bethlehem and  Jerusalem,  the Jordan River and the Wailing Wall, it is his “pilgrimage for prayer.”

Walking where Christ walked...

Joining him are his friends, Rabbi Abraham Skorka and Sheikh Omar Abboud, who leads Argentina’s Muslim community.

He has refused to travel in an armored car and this worries me a little, because evil lives in the world.

But I understand he needs to do this because I know what he is saying to the world by it... all things are possible... And he likes to be close to the people...

I am praying for his safety. And amazed by his bravery.

Jimmie got the pole

Knock out qualifying was tonight and I am not sure how Kevin Harvick and Matt Kenseth missed round three.... But Jimmie got the pole...

Sunday can't get here quick enough.

Are you well read?

From zero to well-read in 100-books: Jeff on Book Riot was to me a very interesting proposition:

Isn’t it strange that we have the term “well-read” but absolutely no one can come close to defining it? And isn’t also strange that other art forms don’t have equivalent terms for a vague sense of someone’s total experience of that form (well-seen for movies? well-heard for music? Absurd).

Thinking about this recently sucked me into a little thought-experiment: say someone had never read any literature and wanted to be well-read. What should they read? And how many books would it take them to get close?

This hypothetical forces any given answerer to do two things: provide their personal definition of well-read and then give a list of books that might satisfy that definition. The first hurdle to clear is cultural position: who is this person? As I can only provide a reasonable list of books from my own cultural position, I have to assume that this person is like me, at least in a very basic way: an alive American who can read English.

“Well-read” for this person then has a number of connotations: a familiarity with the monuments of Western literature, an at least passing interest in the high-points of world literature, a willingness to experience a breadth of genres, a special interest in the work of one’s immediate culture, a desire to share in the same reading experiences of many other readers, and an emphasis on the writing of the current day.

The following 100 books (of fiction, poetry, and drama) is an attempt to satisfy those competing requirements. After going through several iterations of the list, one thing surprised me: there are not as many “classic” books that I associate with the moniker well-read, and many more current books than I would have thought. Conversely, to be conversant in the literature of the day turned out to be quite a bit more important than I would have thought.

As for the number of 100: in addition to being a nice, round number, it is also a number that, at a one-book-every-two-week pace this hypothetical reader could accomplish in just about four years–the standard length of an undergraduate program.

Sprint All-Star Race

So the wild cards were AJ, Clint Boyer- Clint won the shootout with AJ in second, and Jose Wise who with his Dogecoin backers handily won the Fan vote....

Sorry Kyle Larson... no all star for you... insert sad face here...

Tonight is the All-Star race and it is all about a million dollars...

A short race- no points- the best of the best.

4  20-lap segments followed by 10 green flag laps...

Carl Edwards got the pole, Kyle Busch is with him on the frong row, and sad for both Denny and Smoke, who got sent to the back...

Three cheers to Kurt Busch chasing history doing double duty... Stock cars will seem slow to hom after the speed at Indy!

And Jimmie- really... Your warm-up for today was an Olympic Triathlon? Some people would call that showing off... Fastest lap on a mile and a half...

So our line-up of All-Stars by row:
Carl, Kyle,
Jeff, Harvick,
Jimmie, Junior
Kasey, Matt
Boyer, Logano
McMurray, Truex,
Brad, Greg
Smoke, Vickers
AJ,  Kurt
Wise, Ragan
Ryan, Denny

For 90 miles, it is all about the win...

Segment One was all about Carl for nine laps and then Kyle...who has not won at Charlotte in Sprint cup car...ran away from the field... with Gordon behind him closing fast on lap 18...

Segment Two after a mix of pit road strategies- including Denny Hamlin not pitting at all- saw him and Brad  on front row and after the start they were closely followed by Kurt and Edwards...

Gordon came up to play and he Brad and Edwards danced till Kyle Busch in eight  spun on lap 6 after clipping Clint Boyer and then took out Logano in twelfth in turn 3 for our first caution.

On the restart, Clint smoked and AJ was spun out after Greg pushed Vicker into him before a lap was done. I wonder how many guys will be wrecked out of the race... Poor AJ... Denny, after contact with Greg- lost a tire, but couldn't pit and lost a lap.

On Lap 15 Kasey and Carl battled over the lead before Kasey took it... and he won the segment.

Segment Three saw McMurray, Matt, Brad and Truex skip pitting for track position.
Kasey blew through traffic to chase down McMurray and retake the lead. He held it for the segment!

Segment Four saw Jimmie Brad McMurray and Kurt taking only 2 tires to get track position- Kurt picked up 11 spots~ that is amazing.

Jimmie fell like a stone before caution came out on the third lap when Gordon came up into  Truex and Greg couldn't stop and they all got together- Gordon went up in flames. All three are out.

16 cars are still racing and 6 are done for the night...And all the two tire folks must be glad to have the caution laps.

Kasey and Ryan both hit the wall, And McMurray and Harvick battled for the lead with 7 laps to go. Harvick then drove away from the field. Ryan Newman lost a tire right before pit road closed, so he was able to pit...

When the field was reset to best average running order,  we had Harvick Kasey McMurray  Jimmie Junior as the top five running averages. They are followed by Carl, Matt, Brad, Vickers, Kurt, Boyer Hamlin, Smoke, Ragan and Josh Wise. Kasey had to go to the back because he had damage going into the wall.

So that is the order they will pit in, and the 4 tire change is mandatory for everyone- the order off will set the field for our final start...

Ten wild laps togo for a winner...

And they are Edwards, McMurray, Harvick, Matt, Jimmie, Junior, Hamlin, Boyer, Kurt, Vickers, Brad... and they go to the green..

Edwards and McMurray bashing and banging- they trade paint as McMurray takes the lead and raced away from the field... and won

 1 MILLION DOLLARS!

5478 days ago

Thinking of you on your birthday and always:

I pray for the son I barely know
As I prayed for the strength to let you go.
I pray for you now, my little one
And your new life, just begun.
Your parents will shower you with love,
As God watches over you from above,
Though I miss you more than words can say,
I get so much stronger every day.
You are loved, safe and warm
And will be sheltered from every storm.
Knowing they are what’s best for you
I know that I can see this through
So I kiss you and say goodbye
And forgive myself the tears I cry.

Jeff Gordon owns Kansas!

So the race was pretty exciting since everyone was driving their wheels off and slip sliding around the track.

I had no idea who was going to win, and yes, I was hoping it would be anyone who had not won yet- I want us to get to that over 16 winners stage.

It came down to the last pit stop and once Gordon had the lead, he was on it! The whole Hendrick team came alive in Kansas, all in the top 10, but it was Gordon's night. 89 wins. Nicely done.

And, hey, Danica, 7th place- you go girl...

Can I just say THANK GOD Justin Allgaier, Jamie McMurray and David Gilliland all walked away safe and sound from some nasty wrecks- complete with fire? I was holding my breath waiting for them to get out of the cars. I have to say, they were all probably hurting in the morning after such a rough night.

All Star Race weekend is on... Can't wait to see who is picking up a million dollars.

Spending Fast 2014...

Anna Newell Jones, went on a spending fast for a 15 month in 2009 and got out of debt…And I need to be more like her.

In July of 2011 I tried this and in 2012 I was (briefly) out of debt.

But then I needed a new car so my daughter had my old car to use, and I fell away from my saving habits and ran up some medical bills … I hit the maximum salary in my current position, so there are no more cumulative raises, only bonus money, which is taxed higher… Property taxes and insurance costs increased... Gas and food prices are soaring…

I am sure it is all a familiar story to many of you…

For a little while, I was considering selling my house and moving to be closer to work… Short commute… Older homes with character…

But…

I need to be real about money. And with each realtor walking away with more of my money than I would, selling just is not an option.  I can’t lose all the equity I have in my house and start all over. This little ranch isn’t much but it is something. And it is beautifully finished. Yes, I could upgrade to a new heating and cooling system and the electric panel, and one day I would love to have a tankless water heater and a covered patio, but we are good for now.

I need to focus on limiting what I spend money on  and a spending fast will get me back on track.

To that end, my house came off the market. I have 25 years of payments ahead of me and cannot go back to having no equity in a new home.  I will look into  a 20 mortgage refinance to see if I can save money by doing it, but I have to see if the costs involved eliminate my savings from a lower interest rate.

Starting today and for the next six months, until November 8, 2014, there will be no unnecessary spending.

Today. I begin by listing the things I will and won’t spend money on.

Items I need to spend money on:

Mortgage/Home Insurance/Escrow: Not optional! And now includes flood insurance since they redrew the lines for the flood plains- Bah humbug, FEMA! The Miami River didn’t get any closer to my house.

Urgent Home repairs… but hopefully there won’t be any… Please God...

Debt repayment and emergency fund...

Utilities (keeping lights and water off as much as possible; keeping the thermostat at 65 in the winter and wearing a sweater when the cold comes and at 75 in the summer- we have ceiling fans after all!)I already had Duke connect the cycle on/off meter so they can rotate my a/c on and off during peak hours, which lowers my bill a bit.

Basic Cell phone service- no smart phone for me. If it is good enough for Warren Buffet...

Internet/TV - because as much as I need to pay my debt, I need  internet for working from home, and TV for my kids so the next six months does not kill them.

Pool expenses: with summer and the heat, it is the luxury I can’t live without.

Food (store bought and only when I run out of stuff in cupboards and freezers)

School fees (like death and taxes- unavoidable!)

Allowance for John- cause he works so hard

Fairfield Community Center Zumba for me- the exercise is essential to my health plan

Belly Dancing - again invoking the exercise clause

Doctor, Dentist and Medication co-pays- because healthy is happy

Fast Track food and supplements for my post sleeve life- but I can’t buy more till I finish all that I already have.

Essential clothing for work needed due to weight-loss- I will limit myself to used clothing stores and I will buy no item that costs more than $10.

Car payment and full Car insurance with an Umbrella policy- better safe than sorry

Gas for commuting, oil changes, and other car maintenance stuff- but I have already replaced two of four tires and just changed the oil so I should have a couple of months with only gas costs.

Life insurance

What I'm NOT spending money on:

Books… I own enough that I haven’t read… and I can get  free books on Kindle

Cards & Gifts - truth be told, I probably have enough cards in the house to last a year

Shoes – I am amazed at how many shoes I own.

Trinkets…AKA crap...There is a great deal of stuff that fits in this category...

New make-up, hair stuff- bands, elastics etc… This may belong with trinkets...AKA crap...

Eating out- it isn’t healthy anyway

Movies/DVDs/Gaming… with Prime it should be okay- I will have plenty to watch for free.

Bed linens/Towels/Houseware items… I actually need to edit down what I have.

Decorative house stuff- Since my house just got paint and carpet and staging we should be good here

Cafeteria food… I spend too much money in the cafeteria… It is healthier to bring it from home anyway.

Poker

Anything I left off the list that I do not actually NEED.

Here goes nothing!
